Outdoor decoration using focal pointsFocal point is something that attracts immediately the eye and the attention. In outdoor decoration you can use focal points to: Achieve symmetry or movement – a focal point positioned in the middle of a garden will immediately give it more symmetry; if positioned off center, it will give a sensation of movement. Create an atmosphere, style or theme - using focal points in outdoor decoration helps to achieve a more interesting decoration and it can help to set a style or theme. For instance, a modern sculpture in the middle of a space immediately sets the mood for a contemporary decoration. Divert attention from something less attractive - focal points let you attract the eye of a person and in doing so, drive attention from something less attractive, like a shed or compost bin. Elongate or make it short – on terraces or patios, position three or five medium sized pots, with identical plants, in a line, so they will attract the eye and elongate the space. If you position a focal point at the end of a path, the garden will appear longer. Use accessories or plants with shapes and colors that appeal to the eye, on one side of the space and it will appear bigger sideways. Keep the visual attention inside a space or attract it to a view – whether you want to make sure the view from your outdoor room is fully appreciated, or on the contrary, you want the neighbor‘s house forgotten, use focal points to direct your visitor’s attention. Achieve simplicity – a focal point can provide some direction and simplicity in an outdoor decoration that has too many elements (plants, features...) and could be a bit overwhelming.
What to use as a focal point in outdoor decoration: Sculptures are great, whether positioned at the end of a path or right in the center of a garden. Large pots and planters, alone or with plants. If using plants, choose ones with simple shapes that will have visual impact. Large plants with interesting foliage or flowers. Garden decoration accessories like a collection of pillows, a sun umbrella... A wall painted in a strong color. In a balcony, try to paint only a side wall, or the one at the end. Wall planters work well in balconies and patios. Evergreen shrubs are an excellent choice. Some shrubs have interesting shapes that will provide enough interest all seasons. A garden bench attracts the eye and invites a person to stroll in its direction. Or a pergula covered with roses. Fountains provide a sound effect besides the visual one, attracting even more the attention. To ensure the focal point will have the same effect during the night, use outdoor lighting nearby.
